The wrong backpack does not just look bad - it hurts. A bag too small forces you to stuff pockets and hang items externally. A bag too large shifts and bounces with every step. A bag with thin straps and no back ventilation creates shoulder pain and sweat patches on Indian summer commutes.

Choosing right takes three decisions, in order.

The 3-question framework for choosing

Question 1: What will you carry? List everything that goes in the bag on a typical day. A laptop, charger, and notebook? That is 20L. Add a lunchbox, water bottle, and gym shoes? That is 25L. Add a change of clothes for an overnight? That is 30L. Add a full week of travel gear? That is 40L.

Question 2: How will you carry it? Metro and walking? A slim bag with a sternum strap. Two-wheeler? A bag with a chest strap that does not shift at speed. Flights? A cabin-compliant bag under 55×40×20 cm. Train? A bag that fits under a berth or in an overhead rack.

Question 3: How many roles does the bag need to fill? One bag for office only? A slim 20L works. One bag for office and weekend travel? A 25L rolltop like the HOBO25 V3.0 expands and contracts. One bag for travel only? A 40L with front-panel access like the HOBO40 V2.0.

How to test fit - the 60-second check

Step 1: Load the bag to the weight you will carry daily (use books if needed).

Step 2: Put it on with both shoulder straps. The top of the bag should sit at the base of your neck, not above your head or below your shoulder blades.

Step 3: Tighten the sternum strap across your chest. It should sit at mid-chest, not at your collarbone and not at your stomach.

Step 4 (for travel bags with hip belts): Cinch the hip belt so it sits on your hip bones, not your waist. The padded sections should cover the top of your hip bones. Loosen the shoulder straps slightly - the hip belt now carries 60–70% of the weight.

Step 5: Walk for 60 seconds. The bag should not bounce, shift sideways, or pull backward. If it does, adjust strap length or try a different size.
